Soaps are widely acknowledged as excellent damp-proofing agents for building materials such as cement and foundation aggregate. The water soluble soaps react with free calcium salts present in many building materials, creating water-insoluble calcium soap, which acts as a water-impermeable barrier. This can be used to stabilise building foundations against ground-water seepage, and also to protect against weathering effects.
